The Campus Planner/Senior Campus Planner will provide technical planning expertise and leadership for various-sized research laboratories, clinical facilities (Dental), office, and learning environments across the University in the areas of programming, space use analysis, design, equipment/furniture planning, project formulation, and building infrastructure integration. As a steward of University assets, this position will meet with campus constituents to understand needs and advocate for functional and achievable solutions. Creative problem solving, leadership, strategic thinking, and a strong “client” service focus are essential qualities for success in this position.
This position requires the ability to work independently, manage multiple projects and relationships, and to work effectively as a member of a project team. Reporting to the Director of Campus & Capital Renewal Planning, this position will work in close collaboration with colleagues in the Operations Division, Finance, Tufts Technology Services, and School leadership.
Planning and Project Development
- Develop planning solutions, often with multiple options, that demonstrate deep knowledge in the principles and practices of the fields of planning, design and construction particularly in regard to University research laboratories, clinical facilities, office and learning environments.
- Assume a lead role in gathering relevant information to the implementation of planning solutions, such as program fit, application of space allocation metrics, preliminary cost estimates, technology needs, code requirements, schedule and enabling constraints, and campus impact.
- Summarize data, draw conclusions and inferences, and prepare reports and/or presentations in graphic and tabular formats to aid the decision making of School and University leadership to proceed, or not, with proposed plans.
- Provide support with design development, equipment/furniture planning, move planning, finish selection and other services that may be needed for the implementation of Capital projects.
- Develop project scopes; prepare RFQs/RFPs for planning, design and other initiatives; participate in selection of planning/architectural/engineering firms.
- Manage feasibility planning studies with external consultant teams, School and Operations representatives.
- Support colleagues in Facilities Services and Capital Programs on the implementation of approved capital plans.
- Participates in Tufts sustainability goals such as decarbonization, reusing assets, reducing waste, saving energy and efficiently using potable water. This includes developing guidelines related to office, classroom &/or laboratory efficient space use as well as identifying and reporting project-specific opportunities to advance Tufts progress towards these goals.

- Lead and participate in general planning studies related to, for example, campus assets such as wayfinding, real estate, and capital renewal.
- Assist in the development of the Schools’ ten-year capital plans.
- Collaborate with Operations colleagues in the creation of standards for materials, design, space allocation, and building amenities.
- Assist the department with ongoing efforts to ensure the accuracy of spatial data and floor plans for the University.
- Develop familiarity with the importance of space use and spatial data to various university systems including, for example, rate setting for indirect cost recovery, classroom scheduling, O&M calculations, event planning, etc.

- Performs other related duties and participates in special projects as assigned.
One position will be hired, at either a Senior Campus Planner or Campus Planner level.
