Questions to Ask Employers about Company Culture

Interactions with employers, whether during an interview or at a networking event, are an opportunity for you to learn about whether the company would be a good fit for you.  As you identify questions to ask, make sure to do your research and tailor your questions to the specific role and company. Use websites like Glassdoor.com, TheMuse.com, the company’s LinkedIn page, and the company’s website. Here are some questions you can ask:

Core Values:

  • I read on your website about your company’s core values. How do those values show up in daily operations?
  • How does the company mission influence the work that employees do?
  • How do the mission and values impact decision-making? 
  • What stood out to you about my application/background?

Company Culture:

  • What is the best part about working here?
  • How long do employees typically stay in this organization?
  • How would you describe the company’s “personality” or unique culture? 
  • Are there any specific company traditions? What events or activities happen here that don’t happen in other workplaces?
  • When you were interviewing here, what would you have liked to know before you joined?
  • How is appreciation and respect for employees communicated across the company?
  • How are individual backgrounds and identities represented or supported in the organization?

Work Environment and Team Dynamics:

  • Describe the typical day-to-day work environment within the team.
  • How often does the team collaborate on projects, and what does teamwork look like?
  • What are the preferred communication methods within the team/department/company? 
  • When things don’t go as planned with a project or goal, what are the next steps?
  • What is the company’s approach to work-life balance and flexible work arrangements?
  • What resources are available to support employees in being successful?

Leadership and Management Style:

  • How would you describe the leadership style within the company and on this team? 
  • What opportunities are there for mentorship within the team? 
  • What does the review and feedback process look like? Is it connected to company values and mission?

Employee Recognition and Development:

  • What opportunities are available for employees to learn new skills?
  • Are there avenues to advance your career within the company? 
  • What is the process for onboarding new employees?
  • How does the company recognize and celebrate employee achievements?
