Job Search & Job Boards

Searching and applying for jobs takes patience and perseverance. Below you’ll find best practices for conducting your job search and recommended job boards.

Ways to Conduct Your Job or Co-op Search

Passive Search

This involves searching for jobs on job boards such as WITworks, LinkedIn, or SimplyHired.com. Industry specific job boards also exist such as Dice.com, Archinect.com, and Gamejobs.com. Check out the Job Boards section below to find sites specific to your industry.

Tips

  • Always start with WITworks as these are employers who are typically familiar with Wentworth students.
  • Select a few job boards and set up an email alert so you do not have to check back to see if new jobs are posted.

Active Search

Often more effective than a passive search, the active search is where you create a target list of companies where you are interested in working and reach out directly.

How to create a target list

  • Use the “Employers By Major” list on Buzzfile Basic as a starting point to find employers by major and state.
  • Search companies on CareerShift (available to WIT students) to find competitor lists.
  • Ask ChatGPT to create a list of similar companies (More AI Job Search tips here
  • Review the most recent Career Outcomes data to find companies who have hired Wentworth students in the past.
  • Use the Job Market Trends tool to find a list of the top employers by occupation.

How to reach out

Once you have your list, search company websites for job postings, follow their social media pages (especially LinkedIn), reach out to recruiters and hiring managers directly (using CareerShift, Apollo.io or Hunter.io) for information about opportunities or to set up informational interviews

  • Use this resource to find and connect with Wentworth Alumni on LinkedIn at companies on your target list.
  • Current WIT students have access to CareerShift to find contact information to email people directly. Use this guide to craft professional messages.
  • Select “I’m interested” on LinkedIn company “About” pages.
  • Ensure that your social media pages accurately reflect your professional brand and goals.

Networking

This is usually the most effective way of searching for positions. Sometimes jobs are filled without ever making it to job boards. See our resource on Networking for more information.
