Application Follow-Up

Following up with employers after you have submitted a job application supports your interest in their open position. Follow-up communication should occur at least one-two weeks after an application has been submitted. Consider making a follow-up phone call. Picking up the phone can go a long way in making a connection and sometimes produces faster results.

What to include when following up:

Research: Review the company’s website and include something about the position or the company’s projects or mission that stood out or is meaningful to you.

Greeting & Introduction: Address the person you are emailing in a professional manner with “Dear” or “Good morning”. Introduce yourself and why you are contacting them.

Relevant Skills: Mention 2-3 of your skills and/or experiences that align with the position you applied to.

Action Item: Ask for a meeting to discuss the position or an update on the timeline for the hiring process.

Closing: End with a thank you and a professional sign off such as “Sincerely” or “Best”.
