The United States Marshals Service (USMS) is a bureau within the Department of Justice and receives direction from the Attorney General through the Director of the USMS. The mission of the USMS is to enforce federal laws and provide support to virtually all elements of the federal justice system by providing for the security of federal court facilities and the safety of judges and other court personnel; apprehending criminals; exercising custody of federal prisoners and providing for their security and transportation to correctional facilities; executing federal court orders; seizing assets gained by illegal means and providing for the custody, management, and disposal of forfeited assets; assuring the safety of endangered government witnesses and their families; and collecting and disbursing funds.
Presidentially appointed U.S. Marshals direct the activities of 94 districts — one for each federal judicial district. More than 3,700 Deputy Marshals and Criminal Investigators, as well as 1,000+ administrative positions, form the backbone of the agency.
The USMS Office of Construction Management (OCM) is located in Arlington, Virginia. OCM consists of Architectural Services, Construction Management, Facility Management, and Environmental & Occupational Safety personnel. OCM coordinates the space planning, site acquisition, budgeting, design, construction, renovation, facility management, and physical security of real property for all nationwide USMS 550+ field locations, its Territories, and Protectorates. OCM also coordinates prisoner movement space, operations areas, and prisoner detention space within U.S. Federal Courthouses, and any other physical locations associated with the security of USMS space.
OCM is a team of dedicated professionals who collaborate with our stakeholders to create functionally designed spaces. We provide all employees with the opportunity to work on a range of projects from conception to completion in a friendly, engaging, and collaborative workplace environment. We believe that our continued success begins with our people. Projects typically takes 3-5 years or more to complete and interns will be involved in different facets of projects depending on the interns desired specialty (design, construction management, facilities management, interior design etc.)
OCM is seeking motivated, organized, reliable and self-driven students to fill intern roles who have a desire to learn about atypical federal government positions that require their expertise but not a typical design/construction career path. These positions are in-office, minimum 3-days per week, and must report to the USMS Headquarters in Arlington, Virginia (Washington DC Metro area). Project types include administrative office fit-outs, federal courthouse design, aircraft support, military/law enforcement type training facilities and furniture/interiors.
During your time with us every intern contributes their talents to supporting the U.S. Marshal Service mission, participates in professional development opportunities including “back of the house” courthouse tours, learns about the importance of facility operations in successful organizations, and benefits from networking opportunities throughout the internship experience. You will receive guidance, supervision and mentorship by experienced design/construction leaders and professionals with your success as the goal.
