Summary: The Engineering Intern will be responsible for tooling design, process improvements and process documentation.  The core emphasis will be on process / method definitions and development, tooling, work instructions, floor support, training, and continuous improvement activities.  The intern will assist with

projects related to machining, processing, tool design, and new product development support.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Utilize CAD (SolidWorks) to create solid models and drafts of tools and inspection fixtures.
  • Gain an understanding of our sand-casting process and work with the shop floor to create sound process documentation and work instructions.
  • Perform or support the performance of all final production part inspections and measurements, utilizing appropriate measurement instruments.
  • Assist Quality Dept. with First Article Inspections as required to meet ISO 9001 or AS9100 standards
  • Provides engineering support to production

Engineering Design & Support

  • Design fixtures required for all machining operations
  • Convert 3D models into 2D dimensional prints.  Apply GD&T as appropriate
  • Stay updated on the latest machining and tooling.  Present improvement opportunities to management
  • Lead problem solving efforts related to any suspected machining issues
  • Support Design Engineers as required for all new and existing product development
  • Maintain data and metrics of machining and fabrication processes as required
  • Other engineering support as required by management

Project Management

  • Maintain and update project charters and timelines, conduct meetings, obtain quotes, and report milestones to management
  • Other project support as required by management

Problem Solving

  • Identifies and resolves problems in a timely manner; gathers and analyzes information skillfully.

Technical Skills

  • Strives to continuously build knowledge and skills of foundry practices; tool, fixturing and inspection concepts; shares expertise with others.

Project Management

  • Able to fully define project scope and protect against creep; manages resources to ensure project is completed on time and within budget; communicates changes and progress.

Basic Requirements:

  • Mechanical Engineering Student
  • Solid modeling and drafting experience (SolidWorks)
  • Familiarity with ASME Y14.5 GD&T
  • Ability to use inspection instruments such as micrometers, calipers, height gages, gage pins, etc.
  • Basic knowledge of engineering principles
  • Basic MS Office software experience

Preferred Requirements:

  • Fixture design experience
  • Familiarity with problem solving and Lean manufacturing.
  • A strong interest in the aluminum sand casting process

This position will be a balance of office and shop duties. The employee may occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms and talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to stand and walk. The employee is required to sit; climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee may be required to use various hand tools (wrenches, screwdrivers etc.).
