This co-op opportunity is for Spring Co-op semester (9/2 – 12/20) with the potential to work part-time through the end of December.
This is a great opportunity in the high-energy setting of a design school digital fabrication facility. Working with lab staff, student assistants, and students, the ideal candidate has significant previous experience with laser cutting and/or 3D printing equipment and the associated workflow. Given the high-demand pace of the environment, we are looking for someone who is patient and organized, with great attention to detail, strong communication skills, and has a desire to help others on a tight deadline.
Maintain Desktop 3D Printer Facilities and Resources
- Understanding workflow and assisting students in preparing and sending prints
- First contact to troubleshoot and repair 3D printers– identify and replace failed hardware components e.g. replacing printhead, sensors, bearings etc.
- Cleaning and tidying of space – collecting PLA and spools for recycling
- Demonstrate basic understanding digital file preparation for 3D printing, e.g. creating printable 3D files, identifying naked edges, non-manifold edges, inverted normals, and how to repair
- Demonstrate basic understanding with Rhino3d
- Understanding and familiarity with 3d printing file preparation software (Slic3r, Cura, Simplify3d, etc.)
- Creating documentation related to 3d printing use, repair, and best practices
- Enforcing policies as written
Maintain Hotwire Foam Cutting
- Checking on foam cutter locations and repairing them as needed – replacing wire, making sure exhaust system works, identifying hardware components that are broken/need to be replaced and performing the necessary repairs
- Cleaning and tidying of space, collecting foam scraps for recycling
- Creating documentation related to foam cutter use, repair, and best practices
- Enforcing policies as written
- Other related duties may be assigned
Work is performed in a fabrication facility environment.
– Training related to applicable health and safety regulations, standards, and guidelines will be provided.
– Work may require handling of materials requiring health and safety precautions, such as personal protective equipment, including respiratory protection.
This is an overtime-eligible 35-hour per week position. Evening and weekend hours may be required. Approximate duration of position is 09/02/2025 – 12/20/2025, Fall 2025 semester.
