The Co-Op student will work alongside FH Chase’s estimating and project management teams and gain hands-on exposure to the planning and execution of commercial construction projects. FH Chase is an interior architectural specialty contractor with a focus on cleanroom and controlled-environment construction for advanced manufacturing, pharmaceutical, semiconductor, research, and technology facilities.
The student will assist with several phases of a project, from initial estimating and bidding through purchasing, scheduling, material coordination, and construction.
Typical responsibilities will include:
- Assist the estimating team with quantity and material takeoffs from architectural and construction drawings.
- Review construction drawings, specifications, and related project documents to develop an understanding of project scope and requirements.
- Assist with interpreting plans and specifications and identifying discrepancies, missing information, or items requiring clarification.
- Support the preparation of estimates, proposals, material lists, and project budgets.
- Assist with purchasing and procurement of specialty construction materials and equipment.
- Help track material lead times, deliveries, and project logistics to ensure materials are available when required by the construction schedule.
- Assist project managers with project schedules, submittals, RFIs, change documentation, and other project coordination activities.
- Communicate with project managers, field superintendents, vendors, suppliers, general contractors, and other members of the construction team.
- Gain exposure to both office and field operations and learn how an architectural specialty contractor takes a project from the estimating stage through procurement, installation, and project completion.
The goal of the Co-Op experience is to provide the student with practical exposure to commercial construction while developing skills in estimating, construction document interpretation, project management, procurement, scheduling, and field coordination.
