Commercial Security Design Engineer
We are seeking a Commercial Security Design Engineer who thrives on designing complex, integrated security systems at scale. If you live and breathe access control, CCTV, system integration, CAD, and commercial networking – this role was built for you.
ABOUT THE ROLE
The Commercial Security Design Engineer translates client requirements and site conditions into detailed, fully integrated security system designs covering access control, video surveillance, network infrastructure, and third-party integrations. You will work closely with sales, project management, and field teams to ensure every design is accurate, buildable, and delivers a seamless solution for the end user.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Access Control
- Design commercial access control systems including readers, controllers, electric hardware, and credential management platforms (Lenel, Software House, Genetec, Brivo, Avigilon Alta, or comparable).
- Develop door schedules, hardware sets, and locking device selections appropriate for commercial occupancy types and code requirements.
CCTV / Video Surveillance
- Design IP-based video systems including camera placement, field of view calculations, resolution, and storage sizing.
- Select appropriate camera types and specify VMS platforms (Genetec, Milestone, Avigilon, or comparable); size NVR/server infrastructure.
Systems Integration
- Design unified security solutions integrating access control, video, intrusion, intercoms, and building systems on a common platform.
- Document integration requirements, protocols (REST, OSDP, ONVIF, Wiegand), and points lists for commissioning teams.
CAD Documentation
- Produce complete drawing packages in AutoCAD: floor plan layouts, riser diagrams, cable schedules, rack elevations, and single-line diagrams.
- Maintain version-controlled drawing sets coordinated with architectural and electrical documents throughout the project lifecycle.
Network & Infrastructure
- Design security network infrastructure including VLANs, PoE switch sizing, fiber backbone, IP addressing, and bandwidth planning.
- Coordinate with client IT teams to ensure clean integration with existing network environments; specify UPS and power requirements.
Pre-Sales & Field Support
- Develop scopes of work, material take-offs, and labor estimates for bids.
- Lead design kickoff meetings; respond to RFIs and submittals during installation.
