The Architectural Access Specialist works to reduce architectural barriers within the City of Boston as an integral part of furthering the mission of the Commission on Persons with Disabilities. The Architectural Access Specialist works closely with architects, developers, and City departments. Duties are performed under the general direction of the Director of Architectural Access, and directly reports to this position. One of seven staff members of the Commission team comprised of the Commissioner, Chief of Staff, Architectural Access Director, Outreach and Engagement Specialist, Program Manager, and Staff Support Specialist.
- Analyzes architectural projects to assess for code compliance; research solutions to barriers, draft recommendations, and meet with proponents.
- Attends regularly scheduled meetings, hearings, and scoping sessions on behalf of the Commission to gather information and provide input on architectural projects.
- Leads accessibility planning among City departments, including Public Works, the Public Improvement Commission, Boston Planning and Development Agency, BTD, and others.
- Responds to community concerns, complaints, and inquiries about accessibility in Boston.
- Coordinates review of projects with the Disability Commission Advisory Board to ensure architectural barriers are reduced at every opportunity.
- Provides technical assistance related to architectural access as needed.
- May be required to attend some evening community meetings.
Other Duties (Administrative)
- Initiates collaborations with other departments to impact accessibility of design and construction in the built environment (Public Works, BTD, BPDA).
- Develops accessibility guidelines and best practices for other departments to use in design and construction.
- Collaborates with Architectural Access Director to develop policies that will ensure systemic accessibility throughout Boston.
- Ensures completion of administrative for timely completion of all projects. These duties include: overseeing mail, organizing files, scanning documents, keeping project database current
- Meet regularly with the Commissioner and/or Chief of Staff to brief, discuss, and assess projects; participates in all staff meetings as required and requested.
- Staff the Commissioner at meetings, providing notes and ensuring follow-up as needed.
- Serve as a delegate for the Mayor and the Commissioner in meetings, bodies, and events, as requested.
- Contribute to team effort by accomplishing related results to reach the mission of the Office.
- Work with other staff to complete established office procedures that ensure effective daily operation of the office. Duties may include: fielding telephone calls, receiving and directing visitors, processing incoming and outgoing mail, and maintaining databases and mailing lists.
