Cannon Hill Woodworking is a growing start-up woodworking business based in Boston’s Roxbury and Seaport neighborhoods. You’d be almost exclusively working in Roxbury near Nubian Square. As of February 2021, we are four full time, one full time co-op, and two part time employees. We design and build high-end custom furniture, specializing in tables of all kinds. Sam O’leary, who graduated from Wentworth in 2020, is my shop manager, and an exceptionally talented woodworker, and he and I essentially run the business. Please check out out furniture at cannonhillwood.com or on instagram.
We really need someone who is at the very least comfortable with common workshop tools and machines like table saws, sanders, chop saws, jig saws, and the like. It would be a bonus if you have experience with planers and jointers. You have to be able to use a tape measure well and have close attention to detail. You need to take instruction well and be self motivated.
This is a hands on job. How much you’re able to do will depend on your existing skill and experience level. At the very least you’ll be sanding tables, milling lumber, doing glue ups, tying and epoxy filling live edge slabs, staining and oiling furniture, going on deliveries, pickups, and cleaning the workshop. If you have real woodworking talents, we won’t let them go to waste, and you’ll learn higher skill/higher stakes things. You’ll use the jointer, the planer, the band saw, the belt sander, festoon domino jointer, and a myriad of hand tools.
We work with a lot of interior designers. If you have a design background, and you like hands on work, this could be perfect for you. Sam uses his design skills that he learned at Wentworth constantly. We do CAD renderings, simple elevation renderings, and hand drawings for clients weekly.
We’re still somewhat bootstrap but succeeding and growing quickly. We have a good time. There are stressful moments, but this is not a stressful job. This could turn into a part time or full time position after graduation. We need educated and motivated individuals who ideally have a passion for hands on work and building.
IMPORTANT NOTE: There is a physcial element required. The wood is heavy and the tables can be very heavy and you would definitely be needed to help on deliveries. Ideally, you feel like you’d be strong enough for a summer job as a mover. If you are not physically very strong, but you are a skilled woodworker, we can make room for you. If you are not physically strong, and have little woodworking experience, you should still apply, but you will not be considered a top candidate.
No car needed but driver’s license and ability to drive is a must.
